| Kristen Cain Muslims in Dearborn, MI Kristen is one of our home grown missionaries. She was discipled through Chi Alpha at ISU. This is from Kristen’s overseer: “I spent most of my week on the road, visiting staff and missionaries in Michigan and Illinois, but I want to tell you about Kristen Cain, a thirtyish woman who has been hearing impaired since birth. She followed God’s call to serve as a missionary in North Africa, but she had to return to the United States for medical reasons and ended up in Dearborn, Michigan, working with the Arab and Deaf people in that town.” “Kristen does all kinds of creative things – bowling leagues, outreaches in parks, Bible studies, and teaching sign language to people who cannot hear. She does this because hell is hot and time is short, and she wants people to know Jesus.” “Most people would be afraid to work where she does. Her tires have been slashed, her house has been broken into, and her windows have been broken. Does that stop Kristen? No, because she really believes God has called her to bring the Good News of Jesus to this needy area. Kristen Cain is one of those people who, if you have lunch with her or spend time with her, she is like a machine gun full of God’s praises. Are there challenges in her life? Are there things that make her life difficult? You bet! But she’s figured out a way to rise above that.” “Most of us know that southeastern Michigan is one of the areas hit hardest by this economic downturn. Unemployment is huge; people are losing their jobs, businesses are closing, and crime is rising. Yet, American Missionary Fellowship has a lighthouse that shines into the homes and businesses of the Arab community because Jesus has called Kristen Cain to be His worker in that area.” “Kristen needs help. She would love to have people come and join her. It would be awesome if we could find partners for her. Update from Kristen: 4/4/10 “SO WHAT‘S BEEN HAPPENING IN MISSIONS HERE IN SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN AND CANADA?” Dear Friends and Support Team,I can’t believe that spring is almost here! It seems like so much has happened since I sent out my last newsletter back in December! So I’m excited to share with you some of what has been going on since then. A VISIT TO NORTH BEND, OREGON IN DECEMBER! This past December I flew out to Portland, Oregon to visit with a church that has supported me even though I have never been out there to visit them. My missionary colleage and friend, Pastor Mike Bernard and his wife, picked me up at the airport and drove me down to North Bend to visit their fellowship for a week. The people at Shoreline Community Church welcomed me warmly, and I enjoyed my stay in a number of different church member’s homes. I also enjoy visiting with some of the different members of the fellowship, sharing at a Bible study, teaching a class on Islam, and sharing on my ministry on Sunday morning. INVITATION TO MEET WITH THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AT AMF’S HOME OFFICE: In January I received an invitation from our new missions director to fly out to Villanova, Pennsylvania (the mission’s home office) for a day and meet with our board of trustees. I shared with them my ministries and passion. It was great to get to meet these godly men who come from all across the states to help lead our mission. I was greatly encouraged by their servant hearts and passion for the mission. They also blessed me with their encouraging words and prayers! GOD’S IS MOVING PEOPLE’S HEARTS INSPITE OF OUR BAD ECONOMY.
As many of you probably know, Detroit (and even Windsor, Ontario, Canada) has really felt the effects of the recession. There have been so many people out of work, and homes on foreclosure. Yet, even so, God is still working in the hearts of people. In fact a friend recently said to me, “Perhaps it takes an economic crisis to bring a city such as Detroit to it’s knees, to where, having come to the end of themselves, they have nothing left but to seek out God’s help.” In ministering in both southeast Michigan and southern Ontario, I have witnessed a number of Muslims and Deaf who have come to Christ as the result of having tried everything else, and having come to the end of themselves.
SPRING IS ALMOST HERE, AND WITH IT COME OPPORTUNITIES IN MINISTRY! With the change of season has come a change in some of the outreach ministries that I do. For example the Deaf bowling ministry out in Westland, Michigan ended last month, and park outreach has just gotten started. Also, Arab kids sports outreach is getting underway! I always love the park outreach because between spring and fall the Arab women and children spend a great deal of their time in the local parks. It is a great way to meet these women, and through relationship building, do discipleship and relationship evangelism! It’s also a great way to put teams together to do park ministry events focused on the Gospel message that draws in the local Arab community. Also, pray for outreach opportunities as the annual Arab festival in Dearborn is coming up. Thousands of Arabs come to this event each year! It is a great opportunity to meet and share with the Arabs in the streets. OTHER MINISTRIES ARE STILL GOING ON.
Other ministries such as family Bible studies, discipleship ministries, outreach ministries in southern Ontario, Canada, as well as the Deaf Wednesday night Bible study still are going on. So please continue to pray for these ministries. There is much need for more volunteers, resources, and helpers to keep these ministries up and going strong! MINISTRY IS WHAT WE AS CHIRST’S CHURCH ARE DOING TOGETHER…. First of all, I just want to say “thank you” to all of you who have partnered with me in these ministries of reaching Muslims and Deaf for Christ, either by prayer and/or financial support! These ministries are really what God is doing through the partnership of his church (people). So really, these ministries are as much yours as they are mine! If you haven’t already, would you prayerfully consider partnering with me not only through prayer but also possibly financially? It is through the prayers and financial support that I am able to be here, and these ministries are able to keep going. Thank you!
